Firefighters Find Body After Battling Kankakee Warehouse Fire

The body was discovered inside a vehicle that was parked inside the building

Firefighters in Kankakee made a grim discovery while battling a structure fire on Thursday morning when they found a body inside of the burning building.

According to officials, firefighters responded to a report of a burning building at the corner of Harrison Avenue and Locust Street at approximately 5:15 a.m. After being forced out of the building by intense smoke, firefighters were able to get the fire under control, and when they entered the building they found a body inside of a vehicle.

Officials say that a death investigation is now underway, with the Kankakee Fire and Police Departments working with the county coroner’s office.

“While doing an investigation and a search of the building we did find one body inside a vehicle that was inside the building,” Kankakee Fire Chief Damon Schuldt said.

The victim has not been identified, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to authorities.
