Collectible From 1908 Cubs Title Up for Auction

For Chicago Cubs fans with lots of disposable income, there is a strong temptation to buy World Series tickets this weekend for games at Wrigley Field, but a new auction that began on Friday may end up being worth more than a ticket to that massive event.

That’s because Heritage Auctions is selling off a one-of-a-kind collectible that should appeal to any Cubs fan: the very ball used for the final out in the Cubs’ last World Series championship all the way back in 1908.

According to Heritage Auctions, the ball, which was originally owned by Detroit Tigers manager Hughie Jennings, ended up in the possession of his girlfriend and then in the possession of a private family, who has now authorized the auction house to sell the incredible memento.

“As the ball used in 1908 for the final out of the Cubs’ last World Series victory, we risk no hyperbole in declaring it one of the most significant artifacts of baseball history,” Chris Ivy, the appropriately named Director of Heritage Sports Collectibles, said in a statement.

If you want the ball, it is going to cost you a pretty sum. The opening bid is set at $25,000, and bidding is expected to past $100,000 for the keepsake item.

If you need time to get your finances in order before bidding, you still have time. Online bidding for the ball will conclude on Nov. 19.
