Man Charged in February Shooting Death of Subway Shop Employee

A South Side man was charged Friday with fatally shooting a 54-year-old West Town sub shop worker during a February robbery.

Anthony G. White, 36, of the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count each of first-degree murder and armed robbery causing bodily harm, police said. He was also wanted on a warrant in another case.

White is accused of fatally shooting Lyn Ward on Feb. 9 as she worked in a Subway restaurant in the 1100 block of North Western Avenue.

Ward was working when the gunman, allegedly White, came in and announced a robbery about 8:50 p.m., police said. Ward tried to run out the back of the store, but the gunman shot her in the neck and then ordered another employee to open the register.

White took cash and fled, police said. Ward, of the 4600 block of North Magnolia Avenue, was pronounced dead the following morning.

Surveillance images from the subway shop were released days after the shooting.
