Witnesses, Victims Share Harrowing Details of Evanston Carjackings

At first Marsha Cattouse-Lee didn’t believe it was happening.

“They walked up real slow behind me,” she said.

The 39-year-old mom was sitting in her car on the 1200 block of North Fowler Thursday night when she said to young men told her they needed her car.

“I’m not noticing the gun in his hand until he raised it higher,” she said.

She gave them her car and wallet and they took off.

Police say just three hours later, two men approached another victim on the 1700 block of Washington Street and demanded her car keys and wallet, again brandishing a weapon.

Evanston Police raced to the scene and saw the men in two vehicles and pursued them.

One driving Cattouse’s Mazda crashed into a fence on Custer Avenue right beneath an apartment window.

Angela Thomas said she saw it all happen.

“All we hear is this big screech and then a loud boom, and cop cars behind,” she said.

She said the police looked for the men but couldn’t find them, but they did find a loaded gun in the totaled Mazda.
