Evanston Man Dies Eight Days After Assault

A 61-year-old man died early Saturday, more than a week after he was assaulted on his trip to work in Evanston.

John Costulas, of the 7200 block of North Hoyne Avenue, was attacked by two people Sept. 2 near a gas station in the 500 block of West Howard Street, police said.

Costulas was struck in the head and fell to the ground, they said, and left unconscious and bleeding. The attackers then ran away.

Costulas died at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston from injuries sustained in the assault, a spokesperson with the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Evanston police said they're are investigating the incident as a homicide.

A surveillance image provided by police, taken from the Chicago Transit Authority's Howard Red Line station, shows two men with whom police would like to speak.
