Man Shows Gratitude to Friend by Mugging Him

An East Chicago man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing an acquaintance who had earlier paid for his haircut.

Marlon Bethel, 39, pleaded guilty to robbery charges on May 25 and was sentenced Thursday, according to a press release issued by Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter.

Officials said that the acquaintance paid for his and Bethel's haircuts while the two men were in a barbershop on December 12.

Bethel then followed the victim to the basement of the 3500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in East Chicago.  He then pulled a knife on the man who had just done him a favor and demanded money.  Bethel took money and a cell phone, Carter said.

The victim said that this is not the first time, and that Bethel liked drugs and had robbed him back in July.
