Dorothy Brown Announces Mayoral Run Despite Federal Investigation

Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown announced her candidacy for mayor on Sunday at the Chicago Hilton Hotel.

Brown is entering a crowded field of candidates, but says that she will best represent every community in the city.

“I pledge to work with every community to make every square mile of the city of Chicago world-class,” she said. “The city of Chicago has a budget of over $8 billion, and over 35,000 employees. I pledge to ensure that every dollar is used to provide fair and equitable services to our citizens.”

Brown also pledged to find new revenue sources, and pledged to do so without raising taxes.

Her entry into the race raised eyebrows, as her office remains under federal investigation over allegations of bribery. Earlier this year federal prosecutors revealed that Brown requested a $10,000 loan from one of her senior-level employees for her husband’s business as part of their investigation into the case.

Brown has denied any wrongdoing, and has not been charged in connection with the investigation.

Even against a field packed with candidates, including former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas, Brown says that her campaign will be focused on equality of opportunity and equality of role in the political process.

“I will work towards a Chicago that creates fair and equal opportunities for jobs and business creation,” she said.
