Man, 74, Dies After His Car Crashes into Des Plaines Building

A 74-year-old Chicago man died after a crash in northwest suburban Des Plaines on Friday.

At 12:59 p.m., emergency crews were sent to the intersection of Lee and Miner streets for a crash, according to Des Plaines police.

Patrick Tomillo was driving a Hyundai Sonata north on Lee Street across Miner Street when he lost control of his car, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He struck a light pole and stopped when the car struck a bakery being renovated at 1460 Miner St.

The impact shattered a glass window of the bakery, said Grace Iwanicki, who was inside the business. She said people came to help the driver and tried to perform CPR.

Tomillo was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he was pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 6900 block of West North Avenue.

Tomillo may have suffered a medical problem that led to the crash, police said.

An autopsy was expected Saturday.
