David Ross Celebrated Cubs' Division Clincher in Style

The Chicago Cubs clinched the Central Division title by virtue of a St. Louis Cardinals loss on Thursday night, and while getting into the postseason is a big deal, one veteran member of the team celebrated in a decidedly low-key way.

That player is veteran catcher David Ross, who is retiring at the end of the season. After the Cubs lost 5-4 to the Brewers on Thursday night, Ross wanted to check out the scene around the ballpark in case the team clinched by virtue of a St. Louis defeat.

Sure enough, Ross was able to experience that feeling, and he made sure to cut loose just a little bit to celebrate.

“It was pretty low key,” Ross told the Mully and Hanley Show on 670 the Score Friday morning. “I took the train in yesterday to the field, so afterward I got a little workout in to try and let the crowd clear out and walked home. I walked about halfway home and just kind of poked my head into the window of some of the bars and would check the score and saw they (the Giants) had a pretty comfortable lead."

“Then once we clinched and St. Louis lost, I walked into the bar, threw a shot back, and hopped in a cab the rest of the way home. It was pretty uneventful.”

According to Ross, the bartender at the unnamed establishment recognized him and appropriately enough gave him his shot of Jameson for free.

It doesn’t quite have the allure of Cubs manager Joe Maddon offering to buy a beer and a shot for members of the media at his introductory press conference, but Ross still celebrated in a way befitting his status as a veteran member of the team: in an understated, yet appropriate, fashion.
