Illinois State Police Investigate Shooting in Dan Ryan Express Lanes

A shooting snarled traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway during the height of the morning rush hour on Wednesday.

The incident occurred just before 5:30 a.m. between West 71st and 79th streets in the outbound express lanes of I-94, ISP said.

The express lanes in that area were shut down just before 7 a.m., with traffic diverted to outbound local lanes near West 47th Street, once the shooting was confirmed and more state troopers could get to the scene, according to ISP.

Troopers responded to the area of West 83rd Street and South Lafayette Avenue to find the reported victim, ISP said in a release.

The 47-year-old man said he was driving when a gray Jeep pulled along the passenger side of his car and opened fire, according to police. His vehicle was damaged but he did not sustain any injuries, ISP said.

Authorities said officers found six shell casings in the express lanes at 74th Street. Lanes were closed for over an hour before reopening shortly after 8:30 a.m., according to ISP.

The gray Jeep was last seen driving westbound on West 83rd Street from the expressway, officials said. No one is in custody in connection with the shooting as authorities continue to investigate.
