Cubs vs. Indians: Who is Going to Win the World Series?

After six months of baseball and two grueling weeks of postseason action, it all comes down to this as the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians are set to battle in the 2016 World Series.

In this series, we will see the teams with the two longest championship droughts in the sport go up against one another, as the Indians (68) and Cubs (108) have gone a combined 176 years without hoisting a World Series trophy.

With that in mind, with all of the history at stake, and with the players set to square off, there’s only one question that remains to be answered: who is going to win?

In order to answer that question, we’re going to break down who we think has the edge in each area on the diamond, and then we’ll get to our final World Series prediction.

Lineup: Cubs

There are certainly some big-boppers in the Cleveland lineup, and guys like Francisco Lindor, Jason Kipnis, and Carlos Santana are capable of big things, but with the way the Cubs’ lineup has come together, and with the re-appearance of Kyle Schwarber, it has proven impossible to pick against the Cubs.

Anthony Rizzo is definitely a player to watch in this series, as he has killed right-handed pitching all season long, and he could be a pivotal player in the World Series.

Defense: Cubs

The Cubs’ defense has been the best in baseball throughout the season, and although Cleveland has some slick-fielding players, the Cubs are on another level. Having Addison Russell and Javier Baez up the middle is a match made in heaven for the Cubs, and whether Jason Heyward or Albert Almora Jr. is in right field, the Cubs are stout defensively at two defensive positions there as well.

Oh, and David Ross is a dynamic playmaker behind the plate. This team has one “weakness,” and it’s in left field, but that can easily be addressed by placing Almora there late in games. This team has it all in the glove department.

Starting Rotation: Cubs

In Game 1, it is certainly a toss-up as to whether Corey Kluber or Jon Lester is the superior pitcher. Beyond that matchup however, the Cubs have the edge in just about every other matchup, especially with the way that Kyle Hendricks and John Lackey both excelled in their last outings of the previous round.

For a team whose defense provided a ton of highlight reel plays and an offense loaded with sluggers, the Cubs’ best asset throughout the season was arguably their pitching rotation, and that has continued into the playoffs.

Bullpen: Indians

The Indians are close to the Cubs in several areas, and we’re finally giving them the edge in the bullpen. The Cubs have had some shaky outings from guys like Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop in this postseason, and frankly there hasn’t been a more dominant bullpen arm this year than Andrew Miller. The man can literally do anything, and he has as strong an argument as anyone to be the postseason MVP for all of baseball so far this year.

Series Prediction: Cubs in Five Games

In the interest of transparency, we excelled in picking the Cubs’ series wins, picking them to beat the San Francisco Giants in four games and the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. When it came to the Indians, we were off in both instances, picking the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays to both eliminate them from the postseason.

So what’s going to give? We’re going to keep picking the Cubs, sticking with our preseason prediction. This team has the talent in every area to get the job done, and although it would be impossible to call an Indians victory in this series an upset given how talented they are to have gotten to this point, we genuinely feel that this is the Cubs’ year.
