Cubs Hire Chili Davis as Hitting Coach Amid Staff Shakeup

The Chicago Cubs announced several changes to their coaching staff on Thursday as they continue their overhaul following the 2017 season.

The big change announced by the team was in their hitting coach position, as Chili Davis was hired by the team to replace John Mallee. Mallee was hired by the team prior to the 2015 season, but will no longer be part of the staff as Joe Maddon shakes things up.

Davis was the hitting coach in Boston under former Red Sox manager John Farrell, who was fired following the season. He was also a hitting coach with the Oakland A’s after a successful MLB career.

The Cubs also named Brian Butterfield as their new third base coach. Butterfield, who has been a big league coach for over two decades, will take over for Gary Jones. Jones was the team’s third base coach for the last four seasons.

Finally, Andy Hines has been promoted by the Cubs to assistant hitting coach. Hines, who joined the Cubs as a minor league hitting coordinator in 2016, will replace Eric Hinske in that role, as the former coach has accepted a position as the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels.

The Cubs have yet to confirm a replacement for pitching coach Chris Bosio, whose contract option was not picked up by the team. Bench coach Dave Martinez could also find his way elsewhere, as he’s rumored to be the favorite to land the managerial job with the Washington Nationals.
