A homeowner shot one of two men who forced their way into his home near Crystal Lake, northwest of Chicago, on Tuesday morning, police said.

Nicolas Porcayo, 18, and Brandon Mendez, 19, went to the home in the 7300 block of Oakwood Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake early Tuesday and demanded to speak to the residents, according to a statement from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

They kicked down a locked door, and the homeowner, who was armed with a firearm, demanded they leave, according to the statement. The men refused to leave, and the homeowner shot Mendez in the abdomen.

Mendez was hospitalized and expected to survive, authorities said.

Porcayo, who is homeless; and Mendez, of Crystal Lake, were each charged with intimidation and trespass to residence, both felonies, according to police.

The case remained under investigation Wednesday and additional charges could be filed.
