Police are looking for help identifying a man who stole a donation container for a 10-year-old cancer patient Monday from a northwest Indiana tobacco store.

Crown Point Police Sgt. Norman Isaacs said a man was recorded by surveillance cameras walking into The Smoke Shop, at 115 N. Main St., in Crown Point, Ind., distracting the clerk and swiping the tip jar from the counter. Isaacs said the crime happened shortly before 8 p.m. Monday.

The money was being collected for Austin Wielgos, who is fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Wielgos lives in Kentland, Ind., with his family, and is a student at South Newton Grade School, where he enjoys sports. The youngster was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in July and has been receiving chemotherapy treatment at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Donations were being collected to assist with medical expenses. It's unknown exactly how much money was in the jar.

Anyone with information should call Isaacs at 219-663-2131, ext. 129. Anonymous tips also may be left on the Crime Tip Line at 219-663-2131, ext. 265.
