Women Went on Shopping Spree After Stealing Wallets From School, Police Say

The women stole teachers' wallets at Audubon School after pretending to enroll a child, police say

Chicago police said they're searching for two women who they say stole credit cards from a North Side school, then went on a shopping spree.

The women initially pretended they were enrolling a child at Audubon School, at 3500 N. Hoyne Ave., on April 1, police said. During the visit, they went inside two classrooms and stole teachers’ wallets, police said.

The pair then bought $145 worth of items from a Jewel store on the 2900 block of North Ashland Avenue using credit cards from the wallets, police said. They also went on a shopping spree at other area stores, police said.

The women, whose ages weren’t known, were seen in a newer-model Ford Explorer. They are wanted for burglary and credit card fraud, police said.

"It does not make me happy," said parent Shannon Johnston. "It does not make me feel very comfortable. It's quite alarming."

While school officials notified police of the incident, they had not notified parents as of Monday evening. District spokeswoman Lauren Huffman said a letter to parents was planned.

"The safety of our schools is our top priority at CPS," Huffman said in a statement. "The school is currently reinforcing processes with all staff to ensure visitors properly follow protocols regarding access to the building."

One of the thieves was described as a black woman who stood between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighed between 200 and 220 pounds. She had a dark complexion and long hair. She was wearing glasses and a blue baseball cap in a surveillance photo.

The other was a black woman who stood between 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a medium complexion and short hair. She was seen wearing white pants, white shirt and black sweater, police said.
