Mayor Helps Arrest Bank Robbery Suspects

The mayor of Country Club Hills -- who is also a sworn officer with that city's police department -- sprang into action Tuesday and helped nab three bank robbery suspects within 15 minutes of the heist, officials said.

Mayor Dwight Welch was out plowing driveways in the homes of senior citizens when he was told of the robbery at a First Midwest Bank branch and got into a waiting squad car with police officers.

Officials say two men robbed the First Midwest Bank at 4101 W. 183rd St. at about 2 p.m., while the third suspect waited in a van.

Police dispatched a discription of the van, and within minutes it was found behind the Heritage Plaza shopping center.  Footprints in the freshly-fallen snow led police officers from the van to a townhouse.

There, the mayor and three Country Club Hills police officers were joined by an officer from Homewood and another from Flossmoor, where they surrounded a townhouse unit.

All three robbery suspects were arrested.
