Conde Nast Traveler Calls Chicago ‘Best Big City in America'

Mayor Emanuel made a statement in response to the travel website's endorsement of Chicago

The Second City is second to none according to one popular travel website.

Conde Nast Traveler on Tuesday dubbed Chicago the best big city in America, citing a survey the site conducted among its readership.

Chicago received the most votes out of all 15 major municipalities included in the round-up, each with at least 1 million residents.

"Despite its 'Second City' nickname, Chicago is no stranger to the best," the website noted. "It was the center for the biggest architecture biennial in North America this year and home to a number of innovative chefs earning James Beard accolades."

The travel website's endorsement garnered the attention of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who praised the endorsement.

"This title is a testament to the innovation found in our amazing architecture, the ingenuity captured at our award-winning restaurants and 67 breweries, and the congenial character of Chicagoans," Emanuel said. "Conde Nast readers recognize what residents of Chicago have always known."

In addition to the voters' approval, Conde Nast cited the views along the Chicago River, comedic entertainment at Second City and the diverse selection of eateries as some of the features that landed Chicago atop the list.

Mayor Emanuel certainly agrees with the sentiment.

"While our 77 neighborhoods each have unique cultures and characteristics, we are one Chicago, and we are proud of this distinction."
