Community Comes Together for Act of Kindness Toward Chicago Police Officers

Stemming from a Facebook page, the Bucktown Community Organization raised thousands of dollars for what organizers say will now be annual tradition

One Chicago neighborhood showed their appreciation for the community’s police officers in a touching (and delicious) way.

The Bucktown Community Organization raised an impressive $3000 to provide not one, but six meals for the District 14 police officers beginning on Friday.

“We thought it was time to do something nice for them, said Steve Jensen of the Bucktown Community Organization. “Our community really backs the police.”

A piping hot Italian feast catered by local restaurant Club Lucky was brought to the station on Chicago’s Northwest Side, and paid for by the neighborhood that the officers serve.

“I think it's amazing,” said Officer Gretchen Chavez. “This lets all of the officers know that the community backs us and supports us.”

Organizers said it started on a Facebook page for the neighborhood, and in just two days, area residents had raised enough to feed all three shifts buffet-style for the next two Fridays.

“This is a very nice gesture,” said Officer John Zook. “This boosts morale. And tells us that there are a lot of people out there who still actually care. And it's good to have that feeling.”

The community was able to come together so quickly for this cause that they now plan to make it an annual tradition.

“I think there are more people in the community that care than don't care,” said Officer Maria Nodal-Rosario. “And this just shows part of that.”
