A Michigan man shot by a Chicago police officer after he allegedly drove toward officers was charged Friday with felonies.
Michael Cote, of Newaygo, Michigan, was charged with five felony counts of aggravated assault while operating a motor vehicle against a peace officer and five misdemeanor counts of failure to notify police after damaging an unattended vehicle, according to a statement from Chicago police.
The 39-year-old was stopped by officers at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of North Hoyne Avenue. Police in the Shakespeare District stopped Cote’s vehicle after it struck several parked cars in the area, police said in a statement.
Cote then accelerated toward the officers, and "in fear of their lives," one officer shot him.
"I'm not sure if this is a DUI or if [the driver was] over-medicated or what the case is. He was acting extremely belligerent and totally unreasonable at the time," Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said at the time.
The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating.
