Chicago Violence

8 Killed, 45 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

Among the victims was a 14-year-old boy who died after being shot in the head

This past weekend in Chicago was the most violent two-day weekend in the city since Father’s Day of 2013, according to data compiled by the Chicago Tribune.

By Monday morning, at least 365 people were victims of homicide in Chicago this year, according to the Chicago Tribune. The weekend was the most deadly of the year of 2015, outside of Fourth of July’s long and bloody holiday weekend.

Eight people were killed and at least 45 others were wounded in shootings from Friday evening to Monday morning, including a 14-year-old boy who died after being shot in the head.

On Saturday night, 14-year-old Tyjuan Poindexter begged his mother to let him go outside to play basketball with some friends. His mother relented and told him to be careful, but he never made it back home.

Poindexter was outside in the 4400 block of South Greenwood in the Kenwood neighborhood at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday with a 15-year-old boy when shots rang out from a passing vehicle, police said.

The 14-year-old was shot in the head and died at the scene, and the 15-year-old was struck twice in the leg and taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in stable condition.

Witnesses told police there was an altercation at a nearby park before the shooting, but it is unclear if the altercation was related to the attack.

The latest homicide happened Sunday night in Roseland on the Far South Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 9:40 p.m. in the 10100 block of South Calumet found a 43-year-old man unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to Chicago Police. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later was pronounced dead. His name was withheld Monday morning.

Just over an hour earlier, a 37-year-old man was gunned down in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 8:20 p.m., Phillip Floro was walking with a friend in the 1600 block of North Central when he heard a shot and realized he’d been struck in the abdomen, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Floro, of the 3000 block of West Franklin, was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he died at 9:16 p.m., authorities said. Investigators think the shooting was gang-related.

Around 2 a.m., a group of people were standing outside near 57th Street and LaSalle when an offender approached and started shooting at them, according to police. At least one person in the group returned fire.

Six people on the street were shot, including a 28-year-old man who died after he was taken to St. Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said. During the shooting, a dark-colored SUV driving in the area was caught in the crossfire and subsequently rolled over, injuring all six people inside the car, police said.

A neighbor who lives nearby told NBC Chicago he heard 50 or 60 shots fired during the incident and said that it sounded "like a war zone."

Another shooting Sunday morning left a 31-year-old man dead. Police were called to the 11700 block of South LaSalle at about 5:25 a.m., where they found the man unresponsive inside a vehicle parked in an alley.

The shooter allegedly got into an argument with a woman at the restaurant in the 4300 block of South Prairie at about 7:20 p.m. Friday.
