3 Dead, 40 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

At least three people are dead and another 40 people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening, according to police.

The violence comes on the heels of a bloody Fourth of July that saw more than 100 people shot, 14 fatally, over the four-day holiday. 

The weekend's first fatal shooting occurred Saturday at a gas station in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, according to police. A 27-year-old man was involved in an argument with another man in the parking lot of a gas station in the 6600 block of S. Halsted Street around 11:18 p.m. when the second man pulled out a handgun and shot him, authorities said. He sustained gunshot wounds in the right shoulder and arm, according to police, and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but did not release any further details, including his identity.

Friday

• The first shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. in the Washington Park neighborhood on the city’s South Side. A 20-year-old man was in a parked car in the 6100 block of S. King Dr. when someone walked up and opened fire before fleeing in an unknown vehicle, police said. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
• Around 8 p.m., an 18-year-old man was in the 4000 block of S. Kedzie Ave. in the Brighton Park neighborhood when he heard shots and felt pain, according to police. He was shot in the leg, authorities said, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unknown condition.
• Minutes later, a 25-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 7500 block of S. Calumet Ave. in the Chatham neighborhood around 8:15 p.m. when an offender walked up and fired shots, striking him, officials said. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the right calf, according to police.
• Two people were shot during a fight in the South Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side, according to police. Around 11:41 p.m., several men were involved in a fight in the 800 block of N. Latrobe Ave. when one man pulled out a handgun and opened fire, authorities said. A 36-year-old man was shot in the right calf, according to police, and a 34-year-old man was shot in the left leg. Both were taken to West Suburban Medical Center in stable condition, officials said.

Saturday

• About an hour later, authorities said a 19-year-old woman was shot less than a mile away. She was standing on the porch of a home in the 5000 block of W. Division St. around 12:50 a.m. when occupants in a passing silver sedan fired shots in her direction, police said. She was shot twice in the left leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
• Around 2 a.m., a 15-year-old boy was shot in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side, according to police. Authorities said he was walking on the sidewalk in the 11400 block of S. Harvard Ave. when someone in a passing dark-colored vehicle opened fire. He suffered a graze wound to the head, officials said, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition.
• Three people were around 3:40 a.m. in the Princeton Park neighborhood, according to police. A 34-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 9300 block of S. LaSalle St. when two men armed with handguns opened fire, officials said. He was shot in the right leg, according to police, and taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in stable condition. Police later added that two other men were wounded in the same shooting. A man, whose age was not available, was shot in the right leg and took himself to MetroSouth Medical Center, according to police, while a 28-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to an unknown part of his body and was taken to an area hospital.
• Around 11:10 a.m., authorities said a male showed up to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the buttocks after a shooting in the 2900 block of W. Roosevelt Rd. in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood. The victim was not cooperating with investigators, police said, and no further information was available.
• A 25-year-old man and two teenage girls were wounded in a shooting in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood on the city’s South Side, according to police. They were in the 6400 block of S. King Dr. at around 6:20 p.m. when a dark-colored sedan pulled up and fired multiple shots, authorities said. The man was shot multiple times in the chest and arms, officials said, and a family member took him to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was in serious condition. An 18-year-old woman was shot in the left leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, according to police, while a 17-year-old girl suffered a graze wound and was treated by paramedics at the scene.
• Three men were shot in an incident that ended with a car crash around 9:37 p.m. on the city’s West Side, according to police. The victims were in a moving car in the 4200 block of W. Roosevelt Rd. in Lawndale when a gray vehicle pulled up next to them and someone inside fired shots, authorities said. The victims continued driving and struck several vehicles in the intersection of Roosevelt and S. Independence Blvd., according to police, resulting in several people being taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. From the car, a 22-year-old man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the right side of his body, officials said. A 25-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and an 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the head, according to police, and both were taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. Additionally, two responding police units collided with one another, resulting in four officers being taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries as well.
• Around 11:10 p.m., a 43-year-old man was driving through an alley in the 4000 block of S. Vincennes Ave. in the Bronzeville neighborhood when someone in a gray SUV opened fire, according to police. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left arm, authorities said.
• Less than 20 minutes later, a 36-year-old man was shot in the city’s Douglas Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was standing on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of S. Fairfield Ave. at 11:27 p.m. when another man fired shots from a nearby alley, according to police. He was shot in the left hand and taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, authorities said.

Sunday

• Two women were shot while crossing the street just before 2 a.m. in Austin, authorities said. They were in the 1500 block of N. Lawler Ave. when someone in a red SUV opened fire, police said. The 26-year-old woman was shot in the right leg and taken to West Suburban Medical Center in stable condition, according to police, while the 21-year-old woman was shot in both legs and taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
• In the Rogers Park neighborhood, authorities said a man was shot around 3:34 a.m. The 26-year-old victim was walking on the sidewalk in the 7100 block of N. Sheridan Rd. when he heard shots and felt pain, according to police. Paramedics treated him for a gunshot wound to the right arm at the scene and he refused further medical attention, officials said.
• Just minutes later at 3:40 a.m., a 31-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his right leg in the Lawndale neighborhood, according to police. Authorities said he was discovered in the gangway of a residence in the 1900 block of S. Trumbull Ave. and would not cooperate with officers or give any details on the incident. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.
• Around 3:52 a.m., a 29-year-old woman was shot in the city’s South Shore neighborhood, according to police. She was standing on the sidewalk in the 7700 block of S. Yates Blvd. when a man fired shots, officials said, striking her in the right hand. She was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.
• A 25-year-old woman was shot in the Douglas Park neighborhood around 5:10 a.m., officials said. She was walking on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of S. Fairfield Ave. when she heard shots and felt pain, according to police. She sustained a gunshot wound to the lower left leg, authorities said, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

• Around 4:30 p.m., Chicago police said a man was shot in the Little Village neighborhood on the city’s Southwest Side. The 20-year-old victim was standing in the 2200 block of S. Millard Ave. when an unknown male approached him and opened fire, officials said. He was shot in the left leg and left foot and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police.
• Three people were shot at Rainbow Beach in the South Chicago neighborhood on Sunday evening. All three victims were taken to South Shore Hospital in stable condition.  
• Two people were shot around 8 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Jackson. A 26-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the head, and a 19-year-old man was shot in the arm. Both victims were taken to Mt. Sinai hospital in good condition. 
• Just after 9 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the 6200 block of South Francisco. The man told police he was walking on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain. He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital where he was listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left leg, police said. 
• A 40-year-old man was seriously wounded in a shooting around 10:21 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 66th Street, police said. The man was walking down the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain, according to authorities. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the right side of the body. 
• About 10 minutes later, a 23-year-old man was shot in the 6600 block of South Lowe. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition with wounds to the right buttocks. 
• Two men were shot at about 11 p.m. Sunday night while stopped at a red light in the 4300 block of South LaSalle, police said. The two were in a vehicle at the stoplight when someone got out of a white van and opened fire at them. A 28-year-old man was shot in the right buttocks and a 29-year-old man was shot in both legs. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said. 

• Just before 1:30 a.m. Monday, two men were shot while standing on a sidewalk in the 100 block of South Leamington. A 22-year-old man was shot in the left side and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the right leg and taken to West Suburban Medical Center in stable condition. 
• A few minutes later, a 19-year-old man was shot while walking in the 900 block of West 78th Street. The teen told police he was walking on the sidewalk when a man walked up to him and fired shots. He was taken in stable condition to St. Bernard's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right arm, authorities said. 

Four people were also stabbed, one fatally, in separate incidents over the course of the weekend across Chicago. A man, whose age was unknown, died Sunday after being stabbed in the stomach during a verbal altercation at the 95th St. Red Line station on the city’s South Side, according to police.

A 63-year-old man was also stabbed in the neck during an argument in front of a Morgan Park liquor store Saturday night, officials said, and a 32-year-old man was stabbed during a robbery in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Sunday afternoon. Both men were taken to area hospitals in serious condition, police said.

A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen and was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition on Sunday. The man was walking down a street in the 1500 block of West 47th Street when a man grabbed him from behind and stabbed him before stealing his wallet. 

No one is in custody in connection with any of the weekend’s shootings, according to police, who continue to investigate.
