An analysis of Chicago Transit Authority ridership last year showed mixed results: while more people still ride buses than trains, bus ridership was down while rail ridership was up.
Overall, ridership on the entire CTA system was down 2.8 percent from 2013.
In numbers released Friday morning, agency officials said ridership on the eight rail lines reached its highest level in 2014, with 238.1 million rides taken. Officials credit rehab work on stations and tracks, new cars and improved technology for the increase.
Bus ridership declined 8 percent from 2013, to 276.3 million rides, the data show. Officials blamed severe weather conditions early in the year for the dip, pointing out that ridership stabilized later in the year.
