2 Arrested In Fatal Shooting Outside Chicago State University

Shooting happened after a basketball game between high school powerhouses Simeon and Morgan Park

Two people were taken into custody after a fatal shooting Wednesday night outside Chicago State University following a high school basketball game on the South Side Chicago campus.

The shooting happened about 9:20 p.m. near a parking lot outside the school gym at East 95th Street and South King Drive, a fire department spokesman confirmed.

It started with a brawl inside the gym just after a basketball game between Chicago Public Schools Simeon and Morgan Park. Players were going through the handshake line when the brawl began and some of the players ran into the middle of the fight.

Security eventually broke it up, directing all players to stay in their locker rooms, but a short time later guns shots were fired outside the gym.

Police said a man was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition. He later died.

The victim was initially described as a 20-year-old man, but the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as 17-year-old Tyrone Lawson.

Chicago State University police are investigating, and in a statement the school said it is "deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death."

"CPS periodically uses the University’s athletic facility to provide a neutral setting for student sporting events," the statement reads. "This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years.  Additional security is provided by the University and all external partners during high school sporting events."

This isn't the first time Simeon and Morgan Park have brawled during a game. The last time was September at a football game.
