7 Killed, 52 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

Sunday night, two separate Austin neighborhood shootings left two men killed and two men wounded on the West Side

Seven people were killed and at least 52 more were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Monday morning, according to Chicago Police.

About 11:50 p.m., and 18-year-old man and 33-year-old man were at a house party in the 5000 block of West Jackson when shots rang out, police said. The younger man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The older man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and right leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. He was not cooperating with investigators. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the fatality Monday morning. 

Just more than a mile away, officers responding to a call of shots fired about 7:40 p.m. in the 500 block of North Lavergne found two men, both 20 years old, with gunshot wounds inside an SUV about four blocks south, in the 100 block of North Lavergne. Police said the driver of the SUV appeared to have run away. Carlos Harding, of the 4900 block of West Superior, was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m., the medical examiner’s office and police said. The other man was also taken to Stroger with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police said his condition was stabilized. 

Sunday morning, an 18-year-old man was gunned down in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Officers responding to a call of shots fired at 11:25 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Union, found Chureno Gatewood with a gunshot wound to the upper chest, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Gatewood was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 300 block of Madison Street in Gary, Indiana. Police did not immediately have details on the circumstances of the attack. 

Earlier Sunday, 38-year-old Raygene Jackson was fatally shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He got into a fight with someone who then pulled out a gun and shot him in the back of the head about 4:45 a.m. in the 4500 block of West Maypole, authorities said. Jackson was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 1:07 p.m. He lived in the 1200 block of South Kildare. 

Four hours before that, one teenager was killed and another wounded in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood. They were walking in an alley about 12:50 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Ellis when a red minivan pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. A 15-year-old was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other boy, 16, suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and was taken to a hospital in serious condition. 

About 11 p.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side. Officers responding to a call of a person on the ground in the 5100 block of South Calumet found a 23-year-old man lying in a vacant lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A weapon was recovered.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. Saturday in another Austin neighborhood attack. A 19-year-old man was driving about 8:45 p.m. in the 4900 block of West Augusta when shots rang out and he suffered three gunshot wounds to the shoulder and side. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. 

The medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on those three fatalities. 

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 11:05 p.m. Sunday in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side. Two men, ages 33 and 37, were shot in the 3300 block of West Flournoy, police said. The younger victim was shot in the left leg and the older man was shot in both hips. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized. Additional details were not immediately available. 

At least 47 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between about 7:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 p.m. Sunday. 

Additionally, a 40-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg by a Chicago Police officer during a police investigation into a suspected “gun house” Saturday evening in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
