18 Shot in First 9 Hours of Weekend in Chicago

Three people were injured while standing outside an Englewood home around 7:30 p.m. in the weekend's first shooting

At least 18 people were wounded in shootings on the South and West sides during the first nine hours of the weekend, according to Chicago Police.

The latest attack happened in Chatham, where a 29-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 8000 block of South Vincennes about 4:45 a.m. Saturday and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His condition stabilized, but police did not immediately have more details.

Ten minutes before that, a person was shot in Fuller Park. The male victim was taken to Stroger Hospital after the 4:35 a.m. shooting in the 300 block of West 52nd Street, but further details weren’t available.

About 4:15 a.m., two men were wounded in the East Garfield Park neighborhood in the 3200 block of West Maypole, where someone opened fire from a gangway. A 30-year-old man was shot in the left leg and drove himself to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, while a 26-year-old was shot in the left thigh and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Their conditions stabilized, police said.

Another pair were shot in Austin minutes earlier in the 5200 block of West Quincy. A 19-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were outside when someone opened fire from a dark-colored car. She was shot in the left foot and taken to Loretto Hospital, while he suffered wounds to both legs and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Their conditions stabilized, police said.

About 3:15 a.m., a triple shooting happened less than three blocks away in the same neighborhood. Three men were shot by a gunman in an alley of the first block of South Leamington. A 20-year-old man shot in the right shoulder was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, along with a 24-year-old man shot in the hip and arm. Their conditions stabilized, police said. The third man, 31, was treated for an ankle wound and released at the scene.

At 2:36 a.m., a 43-year-old man showed up at Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg and told investigators he’d been wounded while driving on the same block of Leamington. His condition was stabilized, according to police, who said the three Austin shootings were being investigated as separate incidents.

Just after 1 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the right leg while riding in a vehicle in Englewood’s 1900 block of West 64th Street, police said. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and transferred in critical condition to Christ Medical Center.

Late Friday, a 29-year-old man was injured in a Riverdale neighborhood shooting on the Far South Side shortly before 11 p.m. He was walking in the 13300 block of South Corliss when he saw several gunmen exchanging fire, police said. While running away, a bullet struck his right knee. He later showed up at Roseland Community Hospital and was transferred to Stroger Hospital. His condition stabilized, police said.

Another Englewood shooting wounded a 30-year-old man about 8 p.m. when he heard gunfire in the 6000 block of South Halsted and realized he’d been hit in the buttocks. He was listed in good condition at Stroger.

About the same time, a 26-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle in Grand Boulevard’s 4800 block of South Langley when someone got out of an SUV and shot him in the head, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Another 8 p.m. shooting left a 21-year-old man with a knee wound in the 4000 block of West Gladys in West Garfield Park. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

The weekend’s first shooting happened about 7:30 p.m., again in Englewood. Three people were in front of a home in the 6000 block of South Carpenter when someone opened fire from a passing car, police said. A 37-year-old woman was shot in the leg and arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, while a 21-year-old man was shot in the side and took himself to Holy Cross Hospital. Another man, 25, was shot in the arm and took himself to St. Bernard Hospital. All their conditions stabilized, police said.

Forty-three people were shot in Chicago last weekend.
