80-Year-Old Man Found Shot to Death in South Shore Neighborhood

An 80-year-old man was found fatally shot in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Monday morning.

Police said just before 6:30 a.m. the man was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the face in the 2800 block of East 77th Street.

Witnesses said the shooting happened on a patio of the Senior Suites of Rainbow Beach. Residents reported the victim was a longtime resident at the facility and a former minister.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death but did not release the man's identity.

The shooting may have followed a dispute, according to witnesses, but police could not immediately confirm that information.

The Senior Suits Rainbow Beach Independent Living Community released a statement Monday confirming that the man killed was a resident.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased and his family and friends," the statement from Area Operations Manager Trinet Coleman read. "While we do not yet know the circumstances that led up to this incident, we are deeply saddened by this event as the health and safety of our [sic] all of our residents is -- and always will be -- our top priority."

No one was in custody for the shooting as of Monday morning.

Area South detectives were investigating.
