Four Shot Near CPD Headquarters

This is a developing story.

Four people were shot, one of them fatally, Tuesday night fewer than two blocks from Chicago Police Department Headquarters.

The group was on the sidewalk near East 35th and South Prairie Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. when they were hit by bullets. Witnesses told NBC Chicago the shooting was a drive-by.

"One person in that group had a gun for protection. And he seen a car shooting at the innocent person, so he like, 'No, that's not going to happen like that,' so he shot back," said witness Bnisha Butler.

Two victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where they were immediately listed in serious to critical condition. A 52-year-old man was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

Two other people were taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County. One was listed in serious to critical condition. The other was listed in fair condition, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson.

Chicago Police Department Headquarters is located at East 35th Street and South Michigan Avenue.
