Mother Shot, Killed in Front of Kids on South Side

Alleged shooter surrendered to police after being holed up in a nearby home, police say

A young mother was shot and killed in front of her two small children on Monday night in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood, the victim's family members said.

Relatives told NBC Chicago the woman was with her kids on the 1600 block of South Drake Avenue when a man walked up and shot her multiple times before running off.

The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was declared dead, police said.

The alleged shooter was holed up in a home in the area during the 9 p.m. hour, officials said. He later surrendered peacefully to police.

Information about charges was not available by Tuesday afternoon.

The fatal shooting comes after an especially violent holiday weekend that left 12 dead and more than 70 others wounded by gunfire.

In response, police Supt. Garry McCarthy said he was "disappointed" by the violence but insisted his crime-fighting strategies were working.
