Chicago police Officer Robert Rialmo walked out of the Daley Center under heavy sheriff's guard Tuesday, but his tumultuous days of testimony are not yet over.
Rialmo admits to firing the shots in 2015 that killed Quintonio Legrier and downstairs neighbor Bettie Jones, but maintains that he only did so because Legrier lunged at him with a baseball bat. Legrier's family filed the lawsuit against the city.
As soon as he took the stand, attorneys grilled Rialmo over his lawsuit against the LeGrier family and his cross suit against the city of Chicago.
They asked: on Dec. 26, 2015, you shot Quintonio LeGrier?
Rialmo answered yes.
"Did you shoot him intentionally?"
"Yes."
"Did he die because you shot him?"
"Yes."
The attorney turned to the jury and asked: are you asking this jury to give you $10 million for killing LeGrier and his neighbor Bettie Jones?
That’s when the city and Rialmo’s lawyer objected.
Earlier forensic pathologist Dr. Judy Melinek testified that Legrier's wounds were not consistent with the officers previous testimony in depositions that LeGrier was coming at him with a baseball bat ready to swing.
Joel Brodsky, like his client, were not present for her testimony.
But LeGrier's mother, Janet Cooksey, and his father Antonio LeGrier were in the courtroom Tuesday.
Prosecutors plan on calling on him to testify later during the trial.
A wrongful death trial that also pits Rialmo against the LeGrier estate and the city of Chicago.
