Several homes had to be evacuated Tuesday morning in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood after a contractor reportedly ruptured a six-inch gas main.

The evacuation began at around 9:15 a.m. near 111th Street and S. Spaulding Avenue.

Peoples Gas shut off the line pretty quickly, did readings and found the area to be safe around 11 a.m.

"The danger is over," said Chicago Fire Media Affairs director.
