Chicago Hikers Rescued From Oregon Trail

Johannah Hail, 29, and Andra Sturtevant, 23, were headed for Mount Rainier

A pair of hikers from Chicago who were bound for Mount Raineir in Washington were rescued Tuesday in central Oregon.

Johannah Hail, 29, and Andra Sturtevant, 23, had been hiking a 500-mile section of the trail from Willamette Pass, Oregon, bound for the active volcano southeast of Seattle, according to Deschutes County Sheriff's Deputy Liam Klatt.

Klatt said the women encountered a large snow field Monday and decided to turn around. They had been using their phone as a GPS device but the phone died and rainy weather kept them from using their solar charger.

A rain storm soaked all their equipment Monday night and they awoke Tuesday to snow.

Klatt said the two were able to charge the phone sufficiently to call 911 for help.

A sheriff's search and rescue team brought them out.
