Chicago Heights Mayor Alex Lopez died Friday, the victim of an apparent heart attack.

The Southtown Star reports that Lopez, who also is superintendent of the Chicago Heights Park District, was at his daughter's basketball practice when he had a heart attack.

He was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights and died at about 6:40 p.m., said Chicago Heights Park District Commissioner Thomas Amadio.

Lopez became mayor in April 2009, when former Mayor Anthony DeLuca resigned after he was appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives.

He was appointed by the city council, becoming the first Hispanic mayor of Chicago Heights.
