‘God Pointed Me in That Direction': Newborn Baby Found in Suburban Field

A newborn baby girl was found in an open field Tuesday morning, according to the Chicago Heights Police Department.

The baby girl was found about 100 feet west of 19460 Chicago Heights-Glenwood Road, according to a news release from police. A father of three found the baby when he happened to walk by when he was trying to catch a nearby bus to pick up his car from a repair shop.

"It was like destined for me to walk through that field, like God pointed me in that direction, I'm positive that's what happened," said James Turner. "I immediately grabbed my phone, like immediately dialed 911."

Turner said the baby still had its umbilical cord.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the baby to St. James Hospital. She had been in the field for two to three hours, police said, citing medical staff.

Chicago Heights Police Chief Tom Rogers said he is also concerned the mother needs medical attention.

"Make sure your well-being is just as good as now is the baby's well-being," he said. "That's the most important."

The baby is in DCFS custody and was said to be in serious but stable condition.

Chicago Heights Police ask that anyone with information about the baby girl or her family call the detective division at 708-756-6422.
