Chicago police officers said they found two guns and more than 160 rounds of live ammunition hidden in a garbage can in the city's Gresham neighborhood on Tuesday.

Officers on patrol said they were flagged down by a person who reported the items stashed in a trash can in a nearby alley. The officers found a rifle, shotgun, scope and the rounds of ammunition inside a plastic trash bag, police said.

"This is an important example of how members of the community can make an impact on crime where they live," police Supt. Garry McCarthy said in a written statement.

Officers did not release the block address at which the guns were found.

McCarthy last week said that more than 2,000 illegal weapons had been recovered by officers since the beginning of the year.
