Chicago Fire Star Bastian Schweinsteiger Named MLS All-Star Captain

The MLS All-Star Game will be contested in Chicago next week, and one of the league’s biggest stars will wear the captain’s armband as the team takes on Real Madrid.

That star is Chicago Fire midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who won a fan vote to serve as the captain when the MLS All-Stars take on the European champions at Soldier Field on Aug. 2.

Schweinsteiger, who has scored two goals and helped lead the Chicago Fire to one of the league’s best records this season, posted a video message on Instagram to thank fans for voting for him:

Schweinsteiger won’t be alone on the pitch as the Fire will be well-represented in the game. Fire coach Veljko Paunovic will be at the game, as well as Schweinsteiger’s teammates Dax McCarty, Nemanja Nikolic and Johan Kappelhof.

The game between the MLS All-Stars and Real Madrid will take place on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CDT. Tickets are still available, according to the league.
