Fetuses Found in Jars Are Human, Medical Examiner Says

Police are not yet treating the discovery as a criminal matter

A pair of fetuses found in jars outside an apartment building in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood earlier this week are human, authorities said.

An employee of a nearby business found the two jars wrapped in a plastic bag that was left outside the building, on the 2500 block of South Harding Avenue, at about 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

"It looks like an employee from the business was out front when he saw a plastic bag that contained what he thought were human fetuses," police spokesman Jose Estrada said.

An official with the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the fetuses were "not viable," the Chicago Tribune reported, and it was not immediately known if they might have been medical specimens.

Police are not yet treating the discovery as a criminal matter, Estrada said.
