Cubs Top Pitching Prospect Adbert Alzolay to be Called Up

Alzolay will not get the start Thursday, but is expected to be in Chicago for the game

The Chicago Cubs are set to call up one of their top prospects, as pitcher Adbert Alzolay will be called up to the big league club on Thursday.

The announcement was made after the Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night. To make room for Alzolay on the active roster, the team will designate pitcher Tim Collins for assignment, according to reporters at the Friendly Confines.

Alzolay, currently the fourth-ranked prospect in the Cubs' system according to MLB Pipeline, has had a strong year in Triple-A Iowa, posting a 2-1 record and a 3.09 ERA in six starts. He has struck out 46 batters in just 32 innings of work, and has been working exclusively as a starter for the team.

The Cubs are in need of some pitching help as the team struggles with health, as Kyle Hendricks remains on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. Reliever Carl Edwards Jr. is also sidelined with an injury, opening up an opportunity for Alzolay.

First pitch between the Cubs and Mets is set for 7:05 p.m. Thursday night.
