A man was shot dead in an Austin neighborhood apartment on the West Side, police said.

A relative found the man about 9:45 p.m. inside an apartment in the 5300 block of West Adams Street, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The man in his 40s had a gunshot wound to the back of the head and was dead at the scene, Alfaro said.

Police said the body was in the early stages of decomposition and that blood surrounding the body had dried, indicating the man may have been shot days earlier.

No one was in custody as of 5 a.m., but detectives said they were working on the case.
