Special Edition Charlie Hebdo Sells Fast in Chicago

Twelve copies were available at City Newsstand locations in Chicago and Evanston

Twelve special edition copies of Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical magazine that was the target of a terrorist attack in Paris earlier this month, sold quickly Friday morning at two Chicago-area locations.

City Newsstand in Evanston and in Chicago each had six copies of the magazine available beginning at 7 a.m.

The copies were sold on a first-come, first-served basis for $7.50 each. Several people were already in line by 2 a.m. Time.com reported earlier Friday morning that 20,000 copies were available around the country.

Another 200 copies are expected in the Chicago area next Friday. Those copies will sell for $9.99.

City Newsstand owner Joe Angelastri said there were some intitial concerns about security because the FBI contacted him and provided him with a contact to call if there were any problems.

Armed gunmen stormed the Paris headquarters of the magazine on January 7, killing 12 people. Authorities said the shooters carried out the attack in retaliation for the publication's frequent, satirical depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

A "survivor's edition" of Charlie Hebdo, published one week after the attack, sold seven million copies worldwide.
