Worker Killed in Carol Stream Factory Explosion

An autopsy on Chad Nelson was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon

An Elgin man was killed in a Monday night factory explosion in Carol Stream, west of Chicago.

Chad Nelson, 35, was testing a 200 gallon air tank for leaks at Maac Machinery just after 11 p.m. when the container exploded, the coroner and fire chief said.

Another worker had minor injuries but refused treatment, Fire Chief Richard Kolomay said.

The factory, at 590 Tower Boulevard, in Carol Stream, makes custom machinery.

There was no smoke or fire associated with the blast but there was structural damage to the facility.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called on Monday night after the incident, police said.

An autopsy on Nelson was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The company was open for business Tuesday.
