Cardinal George Admitted to Hospital

Cardinal Francis George was admitted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood on Sunday, the Archdiocese of Chicago confirmed Tuesday morning.

In a statement, spokeswoman Colleen Dolan said George would remain in the facility for "several days of tests."

The cardinal in December stopped taking part in a clinical trial of a new drug that aimed to improve his immune system in his ongoing battle against cancer.

"The Cardinal continues to count on the prayers of so many who have written to wish him God's blessings," Dolan said.

The cancer in George's liver and a kidney was discovered in August, 2012.

George stepped down as leader of Chicago's more than two million Roman Catholics in November. Blase Cupich became Chicago's archbishop.
