Pawn Store Hit in Smash-And-Grab Burglary

Dodge Caravan used to get into the EZ Pawn store at 67th and Western

A pawn shop in the city's Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood was hit in a smash-and-grab style burglary early Tuesday, police said.

A minivan was used to crash into the EZ Pawn store on the 6700 block of South Western Avenue shortly before 4 a.m., police said.

The store manager's brother, Rodney Cohens, said three thieves jumped out of the Dodge Caravan after smashing through the wall and ran off with TVs.

Cohens said the store had only been open for about three weeks.

Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th) said the store wasn't wanted in the neighborhood but feels badly about Tuesday's crime because the store did bring create jobs. After hearing of so many other burglaries of a similar nature, Foulkes said she felt it was only a matter of time before one occurred in her ward.

Investigators initially classified the crash as a traffic accident but later confirmed that electronics and other items were taken from the store.

No injuries were immediately reported.
