3 Calumet City Schools Close Due to Mold: Officials

Calumet City School District 155 made the decision to close all three of its schools on what was supposed to be the first day of school for students.

School officials tell NBC 5 that mold may have been found in the junior high school and it’s still unclear when that school will reopen.

It's an extra summer day off for Wentworth Jr. High fifth-grader Heaven Esteviz.

"You just never know," parent Krystal Moreano said. "If they found some in there, you just never know."

The district’s superintendent says once the concern became known, the district took immediate steps to assess the concern and this phase is ongoing.

As an abundance of caution, all of the district’s buildings were closed to students Tuesday.

Some parents were forced to find alternative plans for their kids.

Although the district says both Woodrow Wilson elementary and Wentworth Intermediate will reopen Wednesday— Wentworth Jr. High is expected to remain closed.

Tekilla Turnbo’s nephew is not sure when his first day of school will be.

"How long has it been here?" Turnbo asked of the mold. "How was it just found today when the kids have been out all summer?"

These are questions district officials haven’t yet answered.

Only adding that they take this matter very seriously.
