Bryce Harper Responds to Cubs Rumors, Free Agency Talk

Chicago Cubs fans were on Cloud Nine when it was reported that Bryce Harper wanted to play on the North Side, but the Washington Nationals outfielder let some air out of that balloon on Saturday.

In a wide-ranging conversation with the Washington Post, Harper denied that he has stated a preference to play for the Cubs when his contract runs out after the 2018 season.

"I love Peter Gammons," he said Friday. "One of the best baseball historians ever. But I have no idea what the hell he's talking about."

Gammons had reported earlier this year that Harper "would prefer to play for the Cubs" when he hits free agency, and after those reports went public, the outfielder decided to have some fun with it.

The social media universe was set abuzz when Harper posted a picture with Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, featuring the hashtag #Back2BackOneDay:

Harper admitted to the Post that he posted the photo for one simple reason: to troll the media.

"I do that to the media because they stir it more than I do. That's why I do the things I do at times, because it's funny to me," he said.

Harper and Bryant both hail from Las Vegas, and both were given the key to the city during a ceremony in 2015.
