No Bond for Woman Charged in Teacher's Slaying

Alisha M. Walker, 20, of Akron, Ohio, is accused of stabbing Brother Rice High School business teacher Alan Filan

The woman accused of stabbing to death a Brother Rice High School teacher in his Orland Park house this month was ordered held without bond during a brief Thursday afternoon court appearance.

Alisha M. Walker, 20, of Akron, Ohio, had been at the Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, Ind., since her arrest Friday in Fort Wayne in connection with the stabbing death of business teacher Alan Filan.

She appeared at an extradition hearing on Monday and agreed to return to Illinois on a first-degree murder charge.

Walker was picked up by Cook County sheriff’s police on Wednesday and was being held overnight at the Orland Park lockup, police Cmdr. John Keating said in an email, adding that her hearing will be at the Criminal Courts Building in Chicago.

Walker is accused of stabbing Filan, 61, to death last week. Orland Park police said Walker has a history of prostitution and battery and had admitted stabbing Filan. Police found Filan dead on his kitchen floor about 10:35 a.m. on Jan. 21 after being called to check on him when he didn’t appear at work.

He had been stabbed multiple times, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“Walker confessed to being at the home of the victim on Jan. 18 after Filan contacted her via the Internet site Backpage,” according to an Orland Park police statement.

“Walker and Filan argued over money, a struggle ensued, which resulted in Walker stabbing Filan multiple times.”

Walker’s uncle, Ed Hensley, of Winchester, Ky., said he talked with his niece by phone Friday evening from the Allen County Jail and that she told him she and another woman, who also worked for an escort service, had gone to Filan’s home Jan. 18.

Police have confirmed another woman traveled to Filan’s home with Walker but said she is not considered a suspect.

Brother Rice scheduled a Friday memorial service for Filan at the school. It's open only to faculty, students and alumni, said school president Kevin Burns.
