Retired Cop Fatally Shoots Would-Be Carjacker on South Side: CPD

A retired police officer fatally shot a man who was trying to carjack him along with two other suspects on Chicago’s South Side, authorities said.

The botched auto theft occurred about 7:19 p.m. in the 2900 block of South Shields Avenue in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Three male suspects approached the retired officer while he was sitting in his car and demanded the vehicle, police said. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the man, prompting the former cop to open fire with his own weapon, police said. The suspect was struck by gunfire in the upper body.

The suspect was taken to Mercy Hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. The two other suspects were in police custody.

Police were investigating.
