Small Plane Crashes Near Bloomington Airport

Monroe County Airport Director Bruce Payton said his control tower had asked the plane to report when it was three miles out but never heard back from the aircraft

Authorities on Thursday afternoon said a small plane went down near the Monroe County (Indiana) Airport west of Bloomington.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil and Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the crash occurred about 12:45 p.m. short of a runway.

Durnil said there was no immediate word of injuries.

The FAA was sending investigators to the crash site.

Resident Wanda Bennett told The Herald-Times she was mowing grass in the area when she heard "a pretty loud boom'' and saw plumes of smoke.
