Firefighter Efforts Hampered by “Crowded” Home

First responders were called to the 800 block of North Kasper Avenue, in Arlington Heights, at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday

First responders to a house fire in northwest suburban Arlington Heights on Thursday night had a tough time getting into the property because it was "crowded," an official said.

Police officers were the first to arrive to the home, on the 800 block of North Kasper Avenue, at about 11:45 p.m. Firefighters followed and found heavy smoke and large flames, but had difficulty making entry because the doors were blocked.

Arlington Heights Sgt. Steve Hudgens told NBC Chicago there were a lot of items inside the home, which was occupied by a man who lived alone following the death of his wife. Hudgens described the property as "crowded."

The homeowner arrived back at the property while firefighters were working to put out the fire.

No injuries were reported by 5 a.m. in connection to the fire, and Hudgens said he didn't know what caused it.

Fire crews were still on the scene as of 5:45 a.m.
