Cubs Recall Addison Russell, Demote Albert Almora Jr. to Minors

Russell has seven home runs with the Iowa Cubs this season

The Chicago Cubs made a series of roster moves on Friday afternoon, including recalling infielder Addison Russell from Triple-A Iowa.

Russell, who was demoted to Triple-A in late July, hit four home runs, drove in 13 RBI's, and batted .333 after he was sent down. His recall comes a day after shortstop Javier Báez was scratched from the team’s lineup due to an illness.

The Cubs also made a move in their bullpen, activating Brandon Kintzler from the 10-day injured list. Kintzler had been dealing with inflammation in his right pectoral muscle, and will hope to provide a boost to a bullpen that has been struggling in recent days.

Kintzler has a 2.33 ERA in 49 appearances this season, striking out 40 batters and walking 10 in 46 innings.

To make room on the active roster, the Cubs optioned outfielder Albert Almora Jr. and pitcher James Norwood to Triple-A Iowa.

Almora is having a rough season at the plate, hitting .243 with 12 home runs and 32 RBI’s. He has struck out 58 times in 343 plate appearances, and has a career low on-base percentage of .275.
