Pregnant Mom Tried Saving Daughter from Deadly Fire

Police investgating arson

Roxana Ocampo tried to rescue her 7-year-old daughter Itzel Fernandez by running back into the burning Irving Park apartment building Saturday morning.

Instead, the blaze took the lives of the young girl and her 23-year-old mother who was five months pregnant. Police say someone using an accelerant set the fire intentionally.

The fire in the four-story building at 3912 W. Argyle St. started in the stairwell and quickly spread to the upper floors. Ocampo lived on the second floor. An uncle was able to rescue her 4-year-old son Tony and two cousins.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said the building had working smoke detectors, which probably kept other people from dying.

The police Bomb and Arson Unit is working with Grand Central Area detectives on the arson investigation.  No one is in custody.
